What are the odds????
So here is the story - keep in mind that the two new additions have not yet come home from the hospital - today or tomorrow.
Monday morning I get up to get ready for work... I hear nothing out of the ordinary - the dog is snoring, but thats about it. I get in the shower, I get out of the shower. I get dressed and hear some noise - some high pitched squeeking, and some general banter. I go out to the hallway and what do I see? I see an injured bat flopping around and both of my cats tormenting the thing. If it moves, it gets slapped with paws of lightening. So, I grab a piece of cardboard, squash the bat on the floor (not enough to make it go splat) and scoop it into a brown box for the trash. Game over, right? Not even close.
I head into work and call my vet. I say "We had a bat... I want to make sure my dog and cats are up to date on the shots". The dog is good... the cats - nope. Shit. "Ok.. so I don't think they were bit, but what do you recommend?" "Call the Health Department and get the cats in for a booster shot asap."
So I call the Health Department and immediately they ask me where the bat is, was anyone bitten, where were we in the house, etc, etc. None of out bedroom doors were closed 100% so according to the PA Dept and Health, we were all "possibly exposed" to this bat and it should be tested. After telling them it in my trashcan and they are welcome to it, they send a courier over to pick it up.
Fast forward to Tues morning and the cell phone rings... "blah blah words word... positive for rabies..." WTF???? Ok... so now what. I really think that if I was bitten, or my wife or my son, we would have known, right? "Not necessarily.... you should go to the ER and get a rabies vaccine immediately. You should also call your vet to discuss "options" for the two cats.... WTF!
Fast forward again to Tuesday evening... me, my wife and our 2.5 year old son sit for three hours in the ER until the docs go through the riggermarole with the state health department... the end result? a lot of shots over the next 4 weeks. Apparently the shots are based on weight - so I got 5 last night, three for the wife and two for the little guy. My ass hurts. Now we all get to go back 4 more times over the next 3 or 4 weeks for a single shot each time.
Did I mention the new pair are supposed to come home today or tomorrow?
Today's assignments? Call the local critter folks to "bat proof" my atic. Get the cats in for their check and shots... f'n bats...
My ass hurts...
